Shoopdawhoop

Design Conference cancelled. No!

Hopefully this time I won't come late to attend the casual Lifedrawing classes at Linden with Laishan.
I thought it'll help me with my skills in drawing the figure, because I know I totally suck and because I totally don't go school to have the opportunity to do it. Other that at year 12. Boo anyone interested, we'll be there every thursday at Linden Gallery Art Centre at St Kilda. Anyways.

Freelancing again and again. The rate im going is making it impossible to land a fulltime position, luckily due to networking my name happened to have moved from one agency to the next sweetass.

To be honest I havn't job hunted in ages! its because I can't be stuffed right now in life. This is the point where I'm taking a breather.! stupid me. But I do look here and there for positions but, crappy positions there is. not happy jan. (Im too picky, I should stop hey). Well on one hand, I don't totally agree with, 'recruitment agencies'. You know, the ones you see on seek and careerone etc. I think its complete bull* seriously. Someone told me to think of it like this, 'It's a filter and they filter out the shit people from the good people'. that's just how it is nowadays.' Well I think its completely stupid. And there's no need. And its a waste of time.

They don't have any design expertise do they?. The companies choice to go through a recruitment agency. The thing is, some would ask for a resume and not a folio. What happened to 'Actions speak louder than words'  or 'Imagination is more important than knowledge'

Example here, it was awhile ago.
There was a job ad on seek and it was for a junior designer under a recruitment agency. Had the work ethic, descriptions etc. No website for the potential employer. No number of the studio only for the agency. Said it was an 'reknown design studio in melbourne'. No name? Anyways it was very attractive to read, got my hopes up. Bottom said sh*t like For more information regarding the position call bla bla other than that apply sending resume. (Had no reference whether it be in pdf format or any folio) Anyways I wanted to know more so I called them up. Spoke to someone ask them, hey hows it going im henry bla bla bla  would like to know more about the position advertised in seek bla bla bla junior designer. "I'll put you through to, Sheila(or somesh*t)". Knowing me I added if it was ideal for me to send off examples of my folio. "I don't think you need to really, so just send your resume, everything should be on the advert aswell, Thanks for your time bye." I was like what? thats weird. I mean it wouldn't be that hard to differienciate someone good from someone bad when looking at someones folio rather than a piece of paper right especially as a junior? recruitment agencies don't know any better. Unless* juniors resume shows some outstanding achievements  etc. :|. Lols I just think theyre not providing a fair go for people out there when it comes to filters. They tell you to seek help if you need it, So you call but they don't provide it. So then what. All money makers really.
I don't think I'm a really good designer nor a really bad designer. Just lucky person, to have gained experience from showing the art rather then the paper. It's just that recruitment agencies with no design expertise are running the whole shabam. I think the paper compliments the art rather then the art complimenting the paper.

I'm just assuming thats how it goes. Some positions are bloody in whoop whoop, some have positions but creat ugly shit, I'm just too picky and I shouldn't be.

well, I think its about time I walk in or contact places I've dreamt of working at. If they may have an available trial-position or accept simple work experience.
Like I dont mind freelancing and shit its fun being semi-in control, because we get some fairly major input into the work. on the other hand working in an agency you learn alot more and possible gain an attractive salary.

I guess I shouldn't expect to much and should just let things roll. No ones never too young to start and never too old to finish.

And I havn't done anything in awhile so thought I'd jump the wagon and print me self some tees :) nice looking ones not those ugly ones. but I do have to say T- Bar has ok stuff but they've become abit mainstream too.

hey henry,

lol listening to you spew on the recruitment people, but its so true. they dont know shit about design. they probably cant even name the font they use lol, let alone pick out the better designers from the pack...

there's a design conference coming up called AGIdeas between 28 April and 1 May, where it is a 3 day conference with international speakers and stuff, for more information go to www.agideas.com but it looks really good and our teachers were saying that its a good insight into what studios do. there's even studio visits u can go on for $25. the only problem is its $280 for student/new graduates which is quite dear. but they say it will get sold out pretty early on. do u think its a good idea to go despite the price. what do u reckon?
